Update #177
As Estonian supplementary schools wind down their activities for the summer, students are rewarded with report cards, graduation goodies and, for those who played the MisKESKUS video game, also with $25 cash!
All diaspora schools were eligible to have their students participate, and the game was downloaded 125 times around the world!
One graduation ceremony where the rewards were handed out was at the Toronto Estonian School graduation ceremony on May 16, 2023, where students from three classes had participated in the challenge.
"MisKESKUS is a gentle and fun game in a plurilingual learning context that we ourselves have enjoyed playing," says Heli Vanaselja, one of the game developers, "I used this in my 'eesti kooli' classroom to support virtual instruction, to have some fun."
The kids were thrilled to be rewarded for just playing an Estonian videogame. "Adrian was very engrossed in playing and solving the challenges in the game," stated Erki, Adrian's father.
The MisKESKUS video game is an Estonian Arts Centre initiative and was developed by two Estonian-language immersion teachers, Elli Kipper and Heli Vanaselja at the Toronto Estonian School, and programmed by a team headed by Tom Tiisler, from Sudbury, Ontario.
The game is available and suitable for all aged 6+ to enjoy! Laptop or desktop needed to play. The game is downloaded onto your system. The game can be downloaded here.
MisKESKUS gives players a sneak peek inside KESKUS International Estonian Centre before it opens and develops some basic Estonian vocabulary. The Centre is in construction, sign up for the newsletter on the homepage and keep abreast of project progress!
KESKUS International Estonian Centre in downtown Toronto will be a dynamic hub showcasing our rich heritage and promoting Estonian innovation.
