Jõgevahe Pere women's group lands in Toronto
Hobnobbing with City of Toronto politicians and walking through Toronto neighbourhoods at a clip of 17km per day, the 11-member Estonian women's dance group from the Jõgevahe Pere cultural association in Jõgeva County, Estonia, truly 'did' Toronto and surrounding area.
Estonian Arts Centre, the charity associated with KESKUS, promotes the arts in all its forms, including dance. Estonian folk dance at the level performed by Jõgevahe Pere's women's group was a treat for all to take in. "Entrancing" performance, is how the Annex Residents' Association phrased it, as the group's performance at the annual Annex Corn Fest.
The group came to attend 'Nou Pois Äläud-II' Estonian women's weekend folkdance workshop (NPÄ-II) at Jõekääru (read more here) but first drank their fill of North America's 4th largest city.
Kerli Kasar, an instructor and dancer with Jõgevahe Pere, having been a counsellor at Jõekääru Estonian Children's Summer Camp for 3 summers, and Marika Järvet, the group's lead instructor returning for a second year for NPÄ-II, together led the group's navigation.
That said, Ehatare Retirement Home was a definite must on the itinerary. "It was an honour to dance for such an esteemed audience, including several centenarians," noted instructor and dancer Marika Järvet, "the aura in the room was lovely. I'm so very glad we were invited to dance for the residents."
On the must-visit list of every Estonian coming to Toronto is, of course the construction site of the future KESKUS International Estonian Centre, and so it was with Jõgevahe Pere too.
